Fairy Information & Fairy Trivia

Mythology of Fairies

Fairies are tiny legendary creatures from medieval folklore with a human body and wings.  They possess magical powers to cast spells and can fly.

In mythology many Celtic countries believed fairies to be little people forced to live in hiding by the invading humans.

Fairies are known to be mischievous and there are stories about people protecting themselves from the impish fairy with iron, such as attaching a horse shoe at the front door, or with charms made of herbs or the berries and leaves from the Mountain Ash or Rowan tree, by the ringing of bells - especially church bells - or with the luck of four leaf clovers.

First Photo of Fairies

Two cousins in Cottingsly England, 16 year old Elsie Wright and 10 year old Frances Griffiths took five photos of what they claimed to be fairies playing in 1917.

In 1981 the women admitted to faking the photo by using magazine cutouts, but insisted that they saw real fairies.

Plant a Fairy Garden

Fairies love colorful gardens with small flowering and fragrant plants.  Consider planting foxgloves, bluebells, Queen Anne's lace, sweet peas, daisies, lady's slippers, thyme, pansies, violets, hollyhocks, lilac bushes, peonies, primrose and bleeding hearts. Think about the fragrances and the shapes of flowers for fairies to wear as clothing. Basically, plant flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies and you'll also attract fairies.

There should also be foliage to hide in such as ferns, and a water source such as a bird bath or small reflecting pool.

You can decorate your fairy garden with little places for them to live and with shiny objects to attract their attention such as reflecting balls.

Remember that fairies don't like iron, Rowan or Mountain Ash trees or four leaf clovers!
